( القديس الأنبا برسوما العريان، أو آفا برسومة) أحد قديسي القرن الثالث عشر، عاش في وسط الضيق الشديد يحمل إيمانًا حيًا، لا ليدوس على الحيات والعقارب فحسب وإنما ليقدم تعزيات الروح القدس للنفوس المتألمة، هذا وقد وهبه الله صنع الآيات و العجائب.
وُلد سنة 1257 م. من أبوين تقيين، وكان والده يدعي الوجيه مفضل، اتخذته الملكة شجرة الدر كاتمًا لأسرارها. تقبلاه الوالدان كعطية إلهية ثمرة صلوات وأصوام طويلة، لذا ربياه في مخافة الله واهتما بحياته الروحية ودراسته في الكتاب المقدس.
توفى والده وبعد عام توفيت والدته، فطمع خاله في الميراث، أما برسوم فلم يدخل مع خاله في خصومة، متذكرًا قول الحكيم: “باطل الأباطيل الكل باطل وقبض الريح” (جا 1: 2). وإذ حاول بعض أقاربه أن يثيروه ليقاضي خاله رفض تمامًا.
حبه للوحدة:
انطلق خارج الفسطاط ليعيش في مغارة، يحتمل حرّ الصيف وبرد الشتاء، غير مبالٍ بما يصادفه من مخاطر البرية. عاش خمس سنوات في حياة نسكية جادة مع صلوات ومطانيات metanoia بلا انقطاع، يرتدي منطقة من جلد الماعز على حقويه، لذا دعي بالعريان.
في مغارة أبي سيفين:
أرشده الله إلى كنيسة الشهيد أبي سيفين “مرقوريوس” بمصر القديمة، إذ كان بها مغارة بجوار الباب البحري، لا تزال إلى يومنا هذا، وكان بها ثعبان ضخم بسببه امتنع الناس من النزول إليها. حاول القديس أن ينزل المغارة فمنعه خدام الكنيسة مظهرين خوفهم عليه، أما هو فبإيمان بسط يديه نحو السماء وصلى، قائلًا: “يا ربي يسوع المسيح ابن الله الحيّ، أنت الذي أعطيتنا السلطان أن ندوس على الحيات والعقارب وكل قوة العدو. أنت الذي وهبت الشفاء لشعب إسرائيل الذين لدغتهم الحيات عندما نظروا إلى الحية النحاسية، الآن أنظر أنا إليك يا من عُلقت على الصليب لكي تعطيني قوة أستطيع بها مقاومة هذا الوحش”. وإذ رشم نفسه بعلامة الصليب تقدم نحو الثعبان، وهو يقول: “تطأ الأفعى والحيات، وتدوس الأسد والتنين…” (مز 27: 1)، فنزع الله من الثعبان طبعه الوحشي، وصار مرافقًا له في المغارة حوالي 20 عامًا.
فاحت رائحة المسيح الذكية فيه فجاءت الجموع من كل مدينة تطلب صلواته وبركته.
مساندته للمتضايقين:
في أيامه اجتازت الكنيسة ضيقة شديدة في أواخر سلطنة خليل بن قلاوون، إذ أُغلقت الكنائس في كل القطر ماعدا الإسكندرية، وصدر الأمر بلبس العمائم الزرقاء. أما القديس برسوم فكان مستمرًا على صلواته في الكنيسة، رافضًا لبس العمامة الزرقاء. وشى به البعض لدى الوالي فأمر بجلده وحبسه ثم أطلقه فسكن على سطح الكنيسة يقدم صلوات ومطانيات بدموعٍ لكي يرفع الله غضبه عن شعبه ويغفر لهم خطاياهم ويحنن قلوب المتولين عليهم.
وُشى به إلى الوالي مرة أخرى فتعرض للضرب بالسياط والحبس ثم أُفرج عنه ليذهب إلى دير شهران بجهة معصرة حلوان. وهناك عاش في حياة نسكية شديدة، وكانت نعمة الله تسنده، ووهبه الله عطية صنع العجائب. وكان كثير من المتضايقين يأتون إليه ليجدوا فيه راحة سماوية، وبصلاته رفع الله الضيق.
في 5 نسيء تنيح القديس وهو في الستين من عمره.
(Saint Anba Barsouma Al-Aryan, or Ava Barsouma) was one of the saints of the 13th century. He lived amid great hardship, carrying a living faith, not only to tread upon snakes and scorpions but also to bring the consolations of the Holy Spirit to suffering souls. God granted him the gift of performing signs and wonders.
He was born in 1257 AD to pious parents, and his father was named Al-Wajih Mufaddal. Queen Shajar al-Durr took him as a confidant for her secrets. His parents accepted him as a divine gift, the fruit of long prayers and fasts, and thus raised him in the fear of God, caring for his spiritual life and study of the Holy Scriptures.
His father passed away, and a year later his mother died. His uncle coveted the inheritance, but Barsouma did not enter into dispute with him, remembering the words of the Wise: “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity, and grasping for the wind” (James 1:2). When some relatives tried to incite him to sue his uncle, he completely refused.
His love for solitude:
He went out of Fustat to live in a cave, enduring the summer heat and winter cold, regardless of the dangers of the wilderness. He lived five years in serious ascetic life with continuous prayers and metanoia, wearing a girdle made of goat skin, hence he was called “Al-Aryan” (the Naked).
In the Cave of Abu Sefein:
God guided him to the Church of the Martyr Abu Sefein “Markourios” in Old Cairo, where there was a cave near the Sea Gate, still existing today, inhabited by a huge serpent that prevented people from entering. The saint tried to descend into the cave, but the church attendants, fearing for him, prevented him. Yet he, in faith, raised his hands to heaven and prayed: “O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, You who gave us the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and all the power of the enemy. You who granted healing to the people of Israel bitten by serpents when they looked at the bronze serpent, now I look to You, O crucified One, to give me strength to overcome this beast.”
Making the sign of the cross upon himself, he advanced toward the serpent, saying: “You will tread on the lion and the serpent; you will trample the young lion and the dragon…” (Psalm 91:13). God removed the beastly nature from the serpent, and it accompanied him in the cave for about 20 years.
The sweet fragrance of Christ emanated from him, and crowds from every city came seeking his prayers and blessing.
Support for the distressed:
During his time, the Church underwent severe persecution in the late reign of Khalil ibn Qalawun; all churches were closed except in Alexandria, and the order was issued to wear blue turbans. Saint Barsouma continued his prayers in the church, refusing to wear the blue turban. Some informed the governor about him, who ordered him to be flogged and imprisoned, then released. He resided on the church roof, offering prayers and metanoia with tears to appease God’s anger from His people, forgive their sins, and soften the hearts of those in authority over them.
He was reported to the governor again, endured whipping and imprisonment, then was released to go to the Monastery of Shahran near Masr al-Halwan. There he lived a severe ascetic life, supported by God’s grace, who granted him the gift of performing miracles. Many distressed people came to him and found heavenly comfort; through his prayers, God lifted their afflictions.
Saint Barsouma reposed on 5 Nasie at the age of sixty.

The great Saint Barsouma Al-Aryan is a clear sign for seekers of the Kingdom and a living model for those who love the spiritual struggle. The saint was neither a priest, nor a monk, nor a deacon, yet he was a remarkable example of a life of struggle and striving for the salvation of the soul.
