يروي الإصحاح الحادي عشر من إنجيل القديس يوحنا (يو 11) قصة إقامة السيد المسيح للعازر من الأموات، الذي كان من بيت عنيا وشقيق مرثا ومريم، وكانوا جميعًا أصدقاء للسيد المسيح الذي كان يحبهم.
لا يروي لنا الكتاب المقدس شيء عن حياة لعازر بعد ذلك، ولكن بعض الروايات الغير مؤَكَّدة تقول أنه تبع بطرس الرسول إلى سوريا، إلا أن تقليد الكنيسة الشرقية يروي عنه أن يهود يافا Jaffa وضعوه هو وشقيقتيه وآخرين في سفينة بها تسرب ماء قاصدين إغراقهم، ولكن بقوة إلهية رست السفينة بسلام في جزيرة قبرص، حيث أقيم لعازر أسقفًا على كتيون (لارناكا) Kition (Larnaca)، وهناك تنيّح بسلام بعد نحو ثلاثين عامًا. وفي عام 890 م. بنى الإمبراطور لاون السادس Leo VI في القسطنطينية كنيسة ودير على اسمه، ونقل جزءً من رفاته إليها من قبرص.
هناك أدِلّة وفيرة على أن ذكرى القديس لعازر كانت تُكرَّم في الأيام الأولى في أورشليم، ثم بعد ذلك في الكنيسة كلها. فتروي السيدة إثيريا (إيجيريا) Etheria التي ذهبت لزيارة الأراضي المقدسة سنة 390 م. عن موكب احتفالي في اللعازرية Lazarium -حيث أُقِيمَ لعازر من بين الأموات- وذلك في يوم السبت السابق لأحد السعف، وقد تأثرت إثيريا بسبب الجمع الغفير الذي ملأ المنطقة كلها. وفي ميلان بإيطاليا كان أحد البصخة يسمى Dominica de Lazaro، وفي أفريقيا كما نتعلم من القديس أغسطينوس كان إنجيل إقامة لعازر من الموت يُقرأ في عشية ليلة أحد السعف.
حاليًا تقيم أغلب الكنائس الأرثوذكسية تذكارًا لإقامته في يوم السبت السابق لأحد الشعانين، أي حوالي أسبوع قبل عيد الفصح المسيحي.

The eleventh chapter of the Gospel of Saint John (John 11) narrates the story of Christ raising Lazarus from the dead, who was from Bethany and the brother of Martha and Mary. They were all friends of Christ, whom He loved.
The Bible does not tell us anything about Lazarus’s life after that, but some unconfirmed accounts suggest he followed the Apostle Peter to Syria. However, Eastern Church tradition reports that the Jews of Jaffa placed him, his two sisters, and others in a ship with water leaking, intending to drown them, but by divine power, the ship safely reached the island of Cyprus, where Lazarus was made bishop of Kition (Larnaca). He passed away peacefully after about thirty years. In 890 AD, Emperor Leo VI built a church and monastery in Constantinople in his name, transferring part of his relics there from Cyprus.
There is ample evidence that the memory of Saint Lazarus was honored in the early days in Jerusalem, and later throughout the Church. Lady Egeria (Etheria), who visited the Holy Lands in 390 AD, described a ceremonial procession in Lazarium – where Lazarus was raised from the dead – on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Egeria was impressed by the large crowd that filled the area. In Milan, Italy, one of the Paschal celebrations was called Dominica de Lazaro, and in Africa, as Saint Augustine teaches, the Gospel of Lazarus’ resurrection was read on the eve of Palm Sunday.
Currently, most Orthodox churches commemorate his resurrection on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, about a week before the Christian Easter.
His feast is on December 17.

يدعو السيد المسيح المؤمن "حبيبنا"، ولم يقل "حبيبي"، فإن دخولنا في عهد مع الله يجعلنا أحباء ليس فقط له، بل ولكل الكنيسة، بكونه عضوًا فيها. موت لعازر لا يقطع الصداقة بينه وبين السيد المسيح وكنيسته، بل يبقى صديقًا له ولكل الكنيسة عبر كل الأجيال. كأنه يقول: "إنني لست أذهب بذات الهدف الذي كان قبلاً أن أجادل وأصارع مع اليهود وإنما لكي أوقظ صديقنا.
Christ calls the believer "our beloved," and did not say "my beloved," for our entering into a covenant with God makes us beloved not only to Him, but to the whole Church, as we are members of it. The death of Lazarus does not break the friendship between him and Christ and the Church; rather, he remains a friend to Him and to the entire Church across all generations. As if He says: "I do not go with the same purpose as before, to dispute and contend with the Jews, but to awaken our friend.
