وُلدت في منوف في القرن الرابع الميلادي من أبوين غنيين، ونشأت في حياة مقدسة وكانت منذ صباها تحب العبادة لله وخدمة الفقراء.
إذ تنيح والداها اشتاقت أن تنطلق إلى إحدى بيوت العذارى، فقامت توزع أموالها على المحتاجين، وتأوي في بيتها الغرباء، لكن عدو الخير لم يتركها إذ استطاع بعض الأشرار أن يميلوا قلبها شيئًا فشيئًا حتى انهارت تمامًا، واستسلمت للخطية، فصار بيتها مكانًا للفساد.
سمع آباء شيهيت بما حدث فحزنوا جدًا، وقضوا فترة في الصوم والصلاة من أجلها، ثم طلبوا من القديس يحنس القصير أن يمضي إليها، وبالفعل أطاع، وإذ تهيأت لاستقباله، دخل وهو يرتل: “إن سرت في وادي ظل الموت لا أخاف شرًا لأنك معي”، ثم صار يوبخها على استهتارها وهو يبكي بمرارة.
سألته عن سرّ بكائه، فأجاب أنه يعاين الشياطين تلهو على وجهها.
سألته إن كان لها توبة، ففتح أمامها باب الرجاء وسألها أن تترك هذا الموضع وتنطلق معه إلى البرية.
إذ مال النهار سألها أن ترقد في موضع بعيد، وإذ قام في نصف الليل رأى عمودًا من نورٍ نازلًا من السماء والملائكة تحمل نفسها.
اقترب إليها ليجدها قد رقدت، فسجد إلى الأرض يشكر الله على صنيعه معها، وسمع صوتًا يقول: “لقد قُبلت توبتها في الساعة التي تابت فيها، لأنها قدمت توبة خالصة من قلبها”.
دفن القديس جسدها وانطلق إلى البرية يخبر الآباء بما حدث، فمجدوا الله.
تعيد لها الكنيسة في الثاني من شهر مسرى.
She was born in Menouf in the 4th century AD to wealthy parents and was raised in a holy life, loving from her youth to worship God and serve the poor.
After her parents departed, she longed to join one of the houses of virgins. She began distributing her wealth to the needy and offering hospitality to strangers in her home.
But the enemy of goodness did not leave her, for some wicked people managed to turn her heart little by little until she completely collapsed and surrendered to sin, and her house became a place of corruption.
When the Fathers of Scetis heard what had happened, they were greatly saddened. They spent a period fasting and praying for her, then asked Saint John the Short to go to her. He obeyed, and as she prepared to receive him, he entered while chanting: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
He then began to rebuke her for her negligence, weeping bitterly.
She asked him the reason for his tears, and he replied that he saw demons playing on her face.
She asked him if there was still repentance for her, and he opened before her the door of hope, urging her to leave that place and come with him into the desert.
As evening fell, he asked her to lie down in a distant spot. At midnight, he saw a pillar of light descending from heaven and angels carrying her soul.
He approached and found that she had passed away. He bowed to the ground, giving thanks to God for His mercy toward her, and heard a voice saying: “Her repentance has been accepted at the very hour she repented, for she offered sincere repentance from her heart.”
The saint buried her body and went back to the desert to tell the Fathers what had happened, and they glorified God.
The Church commemorates her on the 2nd of Misra (August 8).
