Feasts of Saint Andrew the Apostle:

His Martyrdom: 4 Kiahk – December 13/14

The Translation of His Relics: 29 Abib – August 5

Andrew was the brother of the Apostle Peter, and he was chosen to go to the city of Lydda and to the lands of the Kurds. He entered the city of Lydda, where most of its people had already believed through Peter, and he was accompanied by his disciple Philemon, who had a melodious voice. He commanded him to ascend the pulpit and read. When the pagan priests heard of the coming of Andrew the Apostle, they took their spears and came to the church, standing outside to hear whether he would blaspheme their gods. They heard him read the words of the prophet David: “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands; they have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear; they have noses, but do not smell; they have hands, but do not touch; they have feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound with their throat. Such as these are those who make them, and all who trust in them” (Ps 115: 4-8). Their hearts rejoiced at the beauty of his voice, their emotions softened, and they entered the church, fell at the feet of Andrew the Apostle, and he taught them, and then they believed in the Lord Jesus, and he baptized them and all who remained among the idolaters.

Then he left them and went to the lands of the Kurds and the cities of Axes, Argnas, and Asiphus. Previously, he had gone with Bartholomew to the city of Azarinos, whose people were wicked and did not know God. They continued to preach and teach them until many were guided to know God due to the signs and miracles they performed before them. As for those who did not believe, they conspired against him and sent for him so that when he came to them they might pounce on him and kill him. But when the apostles arrived and heard his good teachings and saw the radiance of his face, they believed in the Lord Jesus and did not return to those who had sent them. Then the unbelievers resolved to go to him and burn him, but when they gathered around him to execute their plan, the Apostle prayed to the Lord, and they saw fire fall upon them from heaven; they feared and believed.

The fame of the Apostle spread throughout all those lands, and many believed in the Lord. Yet the pagan priests did not cease to pursue Andrew; they bound him and beat him severely, and after parading him naked through the city, they threw him into prison until the next day, when they intended to crucify him. Their custom when executing a crucifixion was also to stone the person. The Apostle spent the night praying to God, and the Lord Jesus appeared to him, strengthened him, and said: “Do not be anxious or distressed, for your departure from this world is near,” and gave him peace and disappeared. His spirit rejoiced at what he had seen. The next day, they took him, crucified him on a wooden cross, and stoned him until he rested in the Lord. Some of the believers came and took his holy body and buried him. Many signs and miracles appeared through him.

He is commemorated on the feast of his martyrdom (4 Kiahk) and the remembrance of the translation of his relics (29 Abib).
