بعناية إلهية، التقى القديس أنبا أنطونيوس أب الأسرة الرهبانية ومؤسسها في العالم برئيس المتوحدين الذي سبقه بسنوات طويلة في حياة رهبانية خفية وسط البرية لا يعلم عنها أحد سوى الله الذي كان يعوله بغرابٍ يقدم له نصف خبزة يوميًا لعشرات السنين؛ يشتّم الله صلواته وتسابيحه رائحة سرور، فدعاه: “حبيبي بولا”.
نشأته:
ولد في مدينة الإسكندرية حوالي سنة 228 م. ولما توفي والده ترك له ولأخيه الأكبر بطرس ثروة طائلة، فأراد بطرس أن يغتصب النصيب الأكبر من الميراث. إذ اشتد بينهما الجدل، أراد القديس أنبا بولا أن يتوجه إلى القضاء. في الطريق رأى جنازة لأحد عظماء المدينة الأغنياء، فسأل نفسه إن كان هذا الغني قد أخذ معه شيئًا من أمور هذا العالم، فاستتفه هذه الحياة الزمنية وتهب قلبه بالميراث الأبدي. لذا، عوض انطلاقه إلى القضاء، خرج من المدينة ودخل في قبر مهجور يقضي ثلاثة أيام بلياليها طالبًا الإرشاد الإلهي.
ظهر له ملاك يرشده إلى البرية الشرقية، حيث أقام بجبل نمرة القريب من ساحل البحر الأحمر، وعاش أكثر من 80 سنة لم يشاهد فيها وجه إنسان، وكان ثوبه من ليف وسعف النخل، وكان الرب يعوله ويرسل له غرابًا بنصف خبزة كل يوم، كما كان يقتات من ثمار النخيل والأعشاب الجبلية أحيانًا، ويرتوي من عين ماء هناك.
لقاء مع الأنبا أنطونيوس:
ظن القديس أنبا أنطونيوس أنه أول من سكن البراري، فأرشده ملاك الرب بأن في البرية إنسانًا لا يستحق العالم وطأة قدميه؛ من أجل صلواته يرفع الله عن العالم الجفاف ويهبه مطرًا.
إذ سمع القديس هذا الحديث السماوي، انطلق بإرشاد الله نحو مغارة القديس أنبا بولا حيث التقيا معًا، وقد ناداه أنبا بولا باسمه، وصارا يتحدثان بعظائم الله. وعند الغروب جاء الغراب يحمل خبزة كاملة، فقال الأنبا بولا: “الآن علمت أنك رجل الله، حيث لي أكثر من 80 عامًا يأتيني الغراب بنصف خبزة، أما الآن فقد أتى بخبزة كاملة، وهكذا فقد أرسل الله لك طعامك أيضًا.”
في نهاية الحديث طلب الأنبا بولا من الأنبا أنطونيوس أن يسرع ويحضر الحلة الكهنوتية التي للبطريرك البابا أثناسيوس لأن وقت انحلاله قد قرب. رجع القديس أنبا أنطونيوس وهو متأثر للغاية، وإذ أحضر الحلة وعاد متجهًا نحو مغارة الأنبا بولا، رأى في الطريق جماعة من الملائكة تحمل روح القديس متجهة بها نحو الفردوس وهم يسبحون ويرتلون بفرح.
بلغ الأنبا أنطونيوس المغارة فوجد الأنبا بولا جاثيًا على ركبتيه، وإذ ظن أنه يصلي انتظر طويلًا ثم اقترب منه فوجده قد تنيح، وكان ذلك في الثاني من أمشير (سنة 343 م). بكاه متأثرًا جدًا، وإذ صار يفكر كيف يدفنه، أبصر أسدين قد جاءا نحوه، فأشار إليهما نحو الموضع المطلوب، فحفرا حفرة ومضيا، ثم دفنه وهو يصلي.
حمل الأنبا أنطونيوس ثوب الليف الذي كان يلبسه القديس وقدمه للأنبا أثناسيوس الذي فرح به جدًا، وكان يلبسه في أعياد الميلاد والغطاس والقيامة، وقد حدثت عجائب من هذا الثوب.
تحوّل الموضع الذي عاش فيه القديس إلى دير يسكنه ملائكة أرضيون يكرسون كل حياتهم لحياة التسبيح المفرحة بالرب.
By divine providence, Saint Anba Anthony, the father and founder of the monastic family, met the chief hermit who had preceded him by many years in a hidden monastic life in the wilderness, known only to God, who sustained him with a raven delivering half a loaf of bread daily for decades; God found pleasure in his prayers and hymns and called him: “My beloved Paula.”
Early Life:
He was born in Alexandria around 228 AD. When his father died, he left a vast fortune to him and his elder brother Peter. Peter tried to claim the largest share of the inheritance. As their dispute grew, Saint Anba Paula intended to go to court. On his way, he saw the funeral of a wealthy city noble and asked himself whether this rich man had taken anything of the world with him. He despised worldly life and turned his heart toward eternal inheritance. Instead of going to court, he left the city and entered an abandoned tomb, spending three days and nights seeking divine guidance.
An angel appeared and guided him to the Eastern Desert, where he settled on Mount Nimra near the Red Sea coast. He lived more than 80 years without seeing another human being. His garment was made of palm leaves, and the Lord provided for him, sending a raven with half a loaf of bread every day. Occasionally, he ate fruits of the palm and wild herbs and drank from a nearby spring.
Meeting with Anba Anthony:
Saint Anba Anthony thought he was the first to inhabit the deserts, but the angel of the Lord informed him that there was a man in the wilderness who was above worldly concerns; through his prayers, God lifts drought from the world and grants rain.
Upon hearing this heavenly message, Saint Anba Anthony followed God’s guidance to the cave of Saint Anba Paula, where they met. Anba Paula greeted him by name, and they spoke together about the wonders of God. At sunset, the raven brought a full loaf of bread. Anba Paula said: “Now I know you are a man of God. For over 80 years, the raven brought me half a loaf; now it has brought a full loaf, and so God has sent your food as well.”
At the end of their conversation, Anba Paula asked Anba Anthony to hurry and bring the patriarchal vestment of Pope Athanasius, as his departure was near. Deeply moved, Anba Anthony retrieved the vestment and, on his way back to Anba Paula’s cave, saw angels carrying the saint’s soul to paradise, praising and singing with joy.
Anba Anthony reached the cave and found Anba Paula kneeling. Thinking he was praying, he waited, then approached and found that he had departed, on the 2nd of Amshir (343 AD). Overcome with grief, he wondered how to bury him when he saw two lions approaching. He directed them to the desired spot, they dug the grave, and he buried him while praying.
Anba Anthony carried the saint’s palm-leaf garment and presented it to Anba Athanasius, who was greatly delighted and wore it on the feasts of Nativity, Epiphany, and Resurrection, witnessing miracles from this garment.
The place where the saint lived was transformed into a monastery inhabited by earthly angels dedicating their lives to joyful praise of the Lord.
