عاش هذا القديس في القرن الثامن الميلادي في عصر الأنبا الكسندروس الثاني البابا 43 الذي تولي الباباوية سنة 704 م. إلى سنة 739 م.
وُلد هذا القديس العظيم في مدينة الأقصر من أبوين مسيحيين، وكان والده يشتغل بصناعة الفخار، دعاه متاؤس. وكان منذ صباه مداومًا على العبادة والقداسة. وكان يتردد على دير الأنبا اسحق السائح بجبل أغاثون جنوب غربي مدينة إسنا.
رهبنته:
لما كبر التحق بدير أنبا باخوميوس بجبل أصفون، يبعد حوالي 12 كم شمال غرب مدينة إسنا على الضفة الغربية من النيل و7 كم غرب أصفون.
أصفون بلدة قديمة ذكرها المقريزي في كتابة الخطط المقريزية، وهي ما زالت تابعة لمركز إسنا. ذكرها جوتيه في قاموسه فقال بأن اسمها المقدس هو موطن الإله هوريس، واسمها المدني ومعناه قصر الملك سنوفرو.
محبته لحياة الوحدة ورئاسة الدير:
إذ أحب حياة الوحدة والسكون عمل له مغارة صغيرة في الجبل بالقرب من الدير من الناحية الغربية، وسكن فيها مصليًا في سكون واتحاد مع الله.
بعد نياحة الأنبا مرقس رئيس الدير اختير الأب متاؤس رئيسًا للدير، فقام بنهضة عمرانية ورهبانية كبيرة.
منحه الله نعمة شفاء المرضى وإخراج الشياطين. ومن ذلك أنهم قدَّموا إليه امرأة بها مرض خفي حار في معرفة الأطباء، فعلم بالروح حالها وأمرها أن تُقِّر بخطيتها أمام الحاضرين، فاعترفت أنها تزوجت بأخوين فاعتراها هذا الداء، فصلى القديس من أجلها وبرئت للحال.
قد بلغ من الفضائل هذا الأب أن الوحوش كانت تألفه وتتناول طعامها من يده. ولما بلغ سعيه تنيح بسلام في يوم 7 كيهك بالغًا من العمر 105 سنة، عاش منها 45 سنة في الرهبنة و50 سنة كرئيس للدير.
وما زال جسده المبارك مدفونًا في مقبرة من الرخام داخل حجرة صغيرة في مدخل حصن الدير.
This saint lived in the 8th century AD during the era of Anba Alexandros II, the 43rd Pope, who assumed the papacy in 704 AD until 739 AD.
This great saint was born in the city of Luxor to Christian parents, and his father worked in pottery. He was named Mattaous. From his childhood, he was diligent in worship and holiness. He used to frequent the Monastery of Anba Ishaq the Anchorite on Mount Agathon, southwest of Esna.
His Monastic Life:
When he grew up, he joined the Monastery of Anba Pachomius on Mount Asfun, about 12 km northwest of Esna on the west bank of the Nile and 7 km west of Asfun.
Asfun is an ancient town mentioned by Al-Maqrizi in his book “Al-Khitat Al-Maqriziya,” and it still belongs to the Esna district. Gauthier mentioned it in his dictionary, saying that its sacred name is “The abode of the god Horus,” and its civil name means “The Palace of King Sneferu.”
His Love for Solitude and Leadership of the Monastery:
Because he loved the life of solitude and quietness, he made a small cave in the mountain near the monastery on the western side, and lived in it, praying in peace and union with God.
After the repose of Anba Markos, the head of the monastery, Father Mattaous was chosen as the head of the monastery, and he carried out a great spiritual and structural revival.
God granted him the grace of healing the sick and casting out demons. Once a woman was brought to him with a hidden illness unknown to doctors. He perceived her condition by the Spirit and commanded her to confess her sin before those present. She admitted she had married two brothers, which caused her disease. The saint prayed for her, and she was instantly healed.
This father reached such virtue that even wild animals became tame and ate from his hand. When he completed his mission, he peacefully reposed on 7 Kiahk at the age of 105 years, having spent 45 years in monastic life and 50 years as head of the monastery.
His blessed body is still buried in a marble tomb inside a small chamber at the entrance of the monastery fortress.
