Archangel Gabriel’s Glorification | تمجيد الملاك غبريال

Introduction:
Archangel Gabriel (pronounced Ghabri’el in Coptic, from which the name Ghabrial or Gabriyl is derived) is well known as the messenger angel. He is always referred to as “the angel of annunciation”, for he was entrusted with delivering good news to many people in both the Old and New Testaments.
The name Gabriel means “the might of God” or “God’s strength.”

His Role in the Holy Scriptures:
The Holy Bible mentions many important events that reveal the greatness of Archangel Gabriel’s position among the angels. God chose him to announce to the Virgin Mary the good news of the Incarnation — that Christ would be born of her in the flesh.

We can summarize what is mentioned about him in the Scriptures as follows:

I. In the Old Testament:

Interpreter of Daniel’s vision:
The Lord sent him to explain the vision that the Prophet Daniel saw:

“While I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, ‘O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand.’” (Daniel 9:21–22)

Deliverance of Daniel from the lions:
When the pagan king ordered Daniel to be thrown into the lions’ den because he refused to worship him, the Archangel Gabriel came and saved him:

“My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.” (Daniel 6:22)

II. In the New Testament:

Annunciation to Zechariah the priest about the birth of John the Baptist:

“And the angel answered and said to him, ‘I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.’” (Luke 1:19)

Annunciation to the Virgin Mary about the birth of Christ:

“And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.’” (Luke 1:28)
Some of the holy Fathers say that the Archangel Gabriel was the guardian angel of the Virgin Mary.

Annunciation to the shepherds about the birth of Christ:

“Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” (Luke 2:10–11)
