تعريف:
كلمة “ميخائيل” كلمة عبرية معناها “مَنْ مثل الله؟”(2)، وهي مكونة من مقطعين:
الأول: ميخا = قوة.
الثاني: ئيل = الله.
فيكون المعنى العام للكلمة قوة الله، أو من مثل الله (في القوة). وهي أسم يدل على ما أعطاه الله من قوة ومقدرة وسمو وقداسة.
مركزه بين السمائيين:
يعتبر ميخائيل رئيس الملائكة وهو الأول أيضًا في رؤساء الملائكة السبعة السابق ذكرهم، ففي دانيال يلقب بأنه “واحد من الرؤساء الأولين” (دا13:10).
وفي سفر يشوع يقول عن نفسه بأنه “رئيس جند الرب” (يش5: 14)(1). وفي سفر دانيال يدعى بأنه “الرئيس العظيم” (دا1:12) ولقبه يهوذا الرسول بأنه “رئيس الملائكة” (يهوذا 9).
تعتبره الكنيسة بناء على ذلك رئيس الملائكة الأولين الواقف أمام الرب على الدوام، يشفع فينا أمام الرب، ويدافع عن الكنيسة من أعدائها الشياطين، لذلك تكرمه وتبجله في مناسبات كثيرة، لأن شجاعته فاقت الوصف، ومحبته لله عظيمة جدا، وغيرته على مجد الله لا تحد.
Definition:
The word Michael is a Hebrew name meaning “Who is like God?” It consists of two parts:
Mikha = Power
El = God
Thus, the general meaning of the name is “the power of God” or “who is like God (in power)”. It is a name that signifies the strength, authority, and holiness granted to him by God.
His Rank among the Heavenly Hosts:
Michael is regarded as the Archangel, the first among the seven chief angels mentioned earlier. In the Book of Daniel, he is called “one of the chief princes” (Daniel 10:13). In the Book of Joshua, he identifies himself as the “Commander of the Lord’s army” (Joshua 5:14). Again, in Daniel, he is described as “the great prince” (Daniel 12:1), and in the Epistle of Jude, he is given the title “the Archangel” (Jude 9).
Therefore, the Church honors him as the chief of the archangels, who stands continually before the Lord, interceding for us and defending the Church against the devils, her enemies. For this reason, the Church venerates him on many occasions, recognizing his unmatched courage, immense love for God, and boundless zeal for the glory of the Lord.
