تمهيد:
لقد ذكر رئيس الملائكة رافائيل في سفر طوبيا (أحد الأسفار القانونية في الكتاب المقدس “العهد القديم”، ولم يضفه جماعة البروتستانت في الطبعة البيروتية للكتاب المقدس) وقد كشف عن نفسه قائلًا “أنا رافائيل الملاك أحد السبعة الواقفين أمام الرب” (طو15:12).
وكلمة رافائيل معناها “دواء الله”، وبعض الآباء يلقبونه بالملاك “مفرح القلوب”.
مركزه في الكتاب المقدس:
يروى لنا سفر طوبيا معجزات كثيرة صنعها الملاك رافائيل لطوبيا ووالده، ولأهمية هذه القصة سنوردها كاملة لتظهر أهمية الملاك رافائيل بين السمائيين..
“فأجاب طوبيا وقال لأبيه يا أبت أي أجرة نعطيه، وأي شيء يكون موازيًا لإحسانه؟. أخذني ورجع بي سالمًا، والمال هو استوفاه عند غابيلوس، وبه حصلت على زوجتي، وهو كف عنها الشيطان، وفرح أبويها وخلصني من إفتراس الحوت، وإياك أيضا هو جعلك تبصر نور السماء… حينئذ خاطبهما (الملاك رافائيل) سرًا وقال: باركا إله السماء واعترفا له أمام جميع الأحياء لما أتاكُما من مراحمه… أما أنا فأعلن لكما الحق، وما أكتم عنكما أمرًا مستورًا، إنك حين كنت تصلي بدموع وتدفن الموتى وتترك طعامك وتخبأ الموتى في بيتك نهارًا وتدفنهم ليلًا، كنت أنا أرفع صلاتك إلى الرب. وإذ كنت مقبولا أمام الله كان لابد أن تمتحن بتجربة. والآن فإن الرب قد أرسلني لأشفيك وأخلص سارة كنتك من الشيطان. فإني أنا رافائيل الملاك أحد السبعة الواقفين أمام الرب. فلما سمعا ما قاله ارتاعا وسقطا على أوجههما على الأرض مرتعدين، فقال لهما الملاك سلام لكم لا تخافوا لأني لما كنت معم إنما كنت بمشيئة الله، فباركوه وسبحوه. وكان يظهر لكم أني آكل وأشرب معكم، وإنما أنا أتخذ طعامًا غير منظور وشرابًا لا يبصره بشر. والآن قد حان أن أرجع إلى من أرسلني. وأنتم فباركوا الله وحدثوا بجميع عجائبه”.
وهذه القصة الجميلة ترينا قوة شفاعة الملائكة ومحبتهم للبشر فقد مكث مدة طويلة مع طوبيا لكي يعينه وينقذه ويحرسه في رحلته، وكان أمامهم يأكل ويشرب حتى أن طوبيا لم يعرف أنه ملاكًا مرسل من الله إلا عندما أفصح الملاك رافائيل عن نفسه حتى لا يرتاع من منظره.
تكريم الكنيسة له:
تعيد له الكنيسة القبطية في اليوم الثالث من الشهر الصغير (النسئ)، وله قصة مشهورة مع القديسة اندرونيكا التي جاءت من روما خصيصًا لبناء كنيسة باسمه في الإسكندرية، لأن الملاك رافائيل ساعدها عندما تشفعت به، فنذرت أن تبني كنيسة باسمه في عهد البابا ثاؤفيلس الذي تمم رغبتها، ورسم أبنيها أسقفين لقداستهما (تذكر هذه المعجزة بالتفصيل في سنكسار الكنيسة cuna[arion في سنكسار اليوم الثامن عشر من شهر بابه).
Introduction:
Archangel Raphael is mentioned in the Book of Tobit (one of the Deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament, which is not included in the Protestant “Beirut Edition” of the Bible). He revealed himself saying:
“I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.” (Tobit 12:15)
The name Raphael means “God’s medicine” or “God heals.” Some of the Fathers of the Church also call him “the angel who brings joy to hearts.”
His Role in the Holy Scriptures:
The Book of Tobit tells us of many miracles performed by Archangel Raphael for Tobit and his son Tobias. Because of the importance of this story, it is often told in full to show the greatness of the Archangel Raphael among the heavenly hosts.
Then Tobias answered his father, “Father, what payment can we give him? What could equal his goodness toward us? He led me safely; he brought back our money from Gabael; he obtained for me my wife; he drove away the demon from her; he brought joy to her parents; he saved me from being devoured by the fish; and you also he has made able to see the light of heaven again…”
Then Raphael called the two of them aside privately and said, “Bless God and give Him thanks before all the living for what He has done for you… I will now declare the truth to you and will not conceal anything from you. When you prayed with tears and buried the dead, and left your meal to hide the dead by day and bury them by night, I brought your prayer before the Holy One. And because you were acceptable to God, you were tested.
Now the Lord has sent me to heal you and to deliver Sarah, your son’s wife, from the demon. For I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.”
When they heard this, they were troubled and fell on their faces in fear, but he said to them, “Do not be afraid; peace be with you. Bless God forever. When I was with you, it was by the will of God. Bless Him and sing His praises. You saw me eating and drinking, but that was only in appearance. I use invisible food and drink which cannot be seen by men. Now I am returning to Him who sent me; bless God and proclaim all His wonders.”
This beautiful story shows the powerful intercession of the angels and their deep love for humanity. Archangel Raphael stayed with Tobias for a long time, helping, protecting, and guiding him during his journey. Tobias did not realize he was an angel until Raphael revealed his identity at the end, so that he would not be frightened by his heavenly appearance.
The Church’s Veneration of Him:
The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates the consecration of his church on the 3rd day of the Coptic month of Nasie (the Little Month).
A well-known story tells of Saint Andronica, who came from Rome to Alexandria to build a church in his name because Archangel Raphael had helped her when she prayed for his intercession. She vowed to build a church in his honor during the papacy of Pope Theophilus, who fulfilled her desire and ordained her two sons as bishops for their holiness.
