نشأتها:
نشأت القديسة مارينا (مارينة) بمدينة إنطاكية بيسيدية Antioch, Pisidia، في وسط آسيا الصغرى بفريجية على حدود بيسيدية، وهي غير “إنطاكية العظمى” مقر الكرسي الإنطاكي التي تقع على نهر العاصي على مسافة خمسة عشرة ميلًا من البحر الأبيض المتوسط.
كان دقلديانوس حاكمًا للبلاد وقد عُرف بشراسته في اضطهاد المسيحيين. وقد أصدر أوامره على كل المملكة أن كل مَن يسجد لغير أوثانه يعرّض نفسه للعقاب الشديد والموت. وخرج المنادون يصرخون “إن كل من لا يعبد الأوثان ويسجد لها يُطرح للوحوش الجائعة ويُعذب وتُؤخذ رأسه بحد السيف”، ونظم دقلديانوس عبادة الأوثان وأقام لها الهياكل وعيّن لها كهنة ورؤساء كهنة. وكان مقر رئيس هؤلاء الكهنة في إنطاكية بيسيدية ويدعى اسمه داسيوس وهو والد القديسة مارينا. وكان داسيوس بحكم وظيفته مثابرًا على عبادة أوثانه، كثير الانشغال بقرابينه وبخوره بإخلاص تام. ولما بلغت مارينا عامها الخامس ماتت والدتها وهي على عبادة الأوثان فرأى أبوها أن يسند تربية ابنته إلى مربية تقوم برعايتها أحسن رعاية وأفضل تربية.
القديسة في بيت مربيتها:
كانت هذه المربية تقطن بلدة صغيرة مجاورة لمدينة إنطاكية بيسيدية تبعد عنها حوالي خمسة عشر ميلًا. هناك عاشت مارينا مع المربية القديسة بعيدًا عن أوثان أبيها وعن ممارساته. كانت هذه المربية على قدر كبير من الإيمان، والورع ومحبة الملك المسيح، كما كانت مولعة بسير القديسين وتعاليمهم. عاشت هذه الطفلة تتمتع ببركات المربية الفاضلة لا تسمع إلا الصلوات والابتهالات، ولا ترى إلا الوداعة والإيمان والرجاء. استطاعت مربيتها أن تلقنها الإيمان الحقيقي، لا بالكلام فقط بل بالقدوة الصالحة، والمعاملة الرقيقة والعطف الحاني والنبل في الخدمة. شعرت مارينا في هذا البيت بالراحة والفرح الذي أنساها والديها بسبب ما رأته ولمسته من مربيتها المسيحية من رحمة وإنسانية، فأحبَّت مربيتها حبًا جمًا وتعلقت بها نفسها وشبت على الخلق الكريم من شجاعة وطهارة وصدق مع الناس ومع نفسها.
عاشت مارينا مع مربيتها عشرة سنوات حتى بلغت الخامسة عشرة. ومات أبوها وهي في هذه السن، ففضلت القديسة البقاء في بيت مربيتها. كما كانت مربيتها تعتبر بقاء مارينا معها بعد وفاة والديها من نعم المسيح عليها.
جهاد القديسة:
سمعت مارينا من مربيتها الكثير من سير الشهداء القديسين، عن ثباتهم في الإيمان واستبسالهم أمام الحكام والولاة. سمعت عن الشهداء الأطهار أنهم كانوا يتسابقون للشهادة ولسفك دمائهم من أجل عظم محبتهم في الملك المسيح. فنهضت تصلي قائلة: “أيها السيد المتحنن؛ أنت تعرف ضعف البشرية. وأنا أسألك أن تقويني لكي أغلب المضادين لك وأقدم لك السبح إلى الأبد. آمين”.
أمام الوالي:
وفي أحد الأيام قدم الوفارنوس الوالي الجديد لإنطاكية بيسيدية، وكان مكلفًا بالقبض على المسيحيين وتعذيبهم. وفيما كان مع جنوده يفتش عن المسيحيين إذا بالقديسة مارينا خارجة مع مربيتها فأبصرها وهو جالس في مركبته ورأى جمالها فعزم على أن يتخذها زوجة له مهما كلّفه ذلك. أرسل جنوده للقبض عليها فلما هموا بذلك شرعت تصلي قائلة: “ارحمني يا الله مخلصي ولا تهلك نفسي مع الكفار ولا حياتي مع سافكي الدماء ولا تتخلى عني، لئلا يُهلك الآثمة نفسي، ويدنّسوا مسامعي ويغيّروا فهمي، بل أرسل من العلاء وامنحني نعمة لأتقوى بقوتك؛ وأثبت بغير جزع وأجاوب هذا النجس بحسب سؤاله، لأني أنظر نفسي المسكينة كالشاة بين الذئاب الخاطفة، أو كالعصفور بين المقتنصين، وكالسمكة في شباك الصيادين. فتعالَ إلىَّ يا سيدي يسوع المسيح وخلصني من يد هذا الكافر النجس، ولك ينبغي السبح والكرامة إلى الأبد. آمين”. ولما فرغت المختارة مارينا من مناجاة الرب يسوع رجع الجند إلى الوالي قائلين: “لم نتمكن من القبض على هذه الصبية لأنها تدعو باسم المسيح”، فاضطرب الوالي بمجرد سماعه أن الفتاة مسيحية.
مجد الألم:
كان نظر القديسة متجهًا إلى السماء وهي تقول: “إليك يا رب رفعت نفسي. إلهي عليك توكلت، فلا تدعني أخزى ولا تشمت بي أعدائي، لأن كل منتظريك لا يخزون؛ ليخز الغادرون بلا سبب… لأنني احتمل هذه العذابات من أجل اعترافي باسمك القدوس. ارسل رحمتك وتحننك لكي يتحول حزني هذا إلى فرح.” وبينما كانت القديسة مارينا ترنم مسبحة كان الجند يضربونها ضربًا مبرحًا حتى تمزق جسدها وسال دمها غزيرًا، وعندئذ ظهر لها رئيس الملائكة الجليل ميخائيل وقال لها: “عظيم إيمانك يا مارينا، تقوِ في الإيمان أكثر لأن باعترافك الحسن تحيا نفسك وستنالين المعمودية المقدسة”.
في السجن:
عند دخولها رشمت نفسها بعلامة الصليب قائلة: “أيها القدوس مثبت كل الأمور الصالحة بيديك. ومن خوف مجدك ترتعد كل الخليقة. أنت رجاء التائبين ومحرر المأسورين. أنت أب اليتامى وقاضي الأرامل. أنظر إلى ذلي ومسكنتي ونجني ولا تتخلى عني يا إلهي، لأني قد رفعت نفسي إليك يا إلهي، وليس لي رجاء غيرك”.
التنين والشيطان والعماد والاستشهاد:
ظلّت القديسة مارينا تصلي وتواجه كل الشرور والمعوقات التي أرسلها الوالي، بدءًا من التنين، والشيطان، حتى المعمودية، وختامًا استشهادها بقطع الرأس، وكلها بقيت ثابتة في إيمانها ومخلصتها في خدمة المسيح.
Her Early Life:
Saint Marina (Marina) grew up in the city of Antioch, Pisidia, in central Asia Minor in Phrygia, on the borders of Pisidia, which is not “Great Antioch,” the seat of the Antiochian patriarchate, located on the Orontes River about fifteen miles from the Mediterranean Sea.
Diocletian was the ruler of the country and was known for his cruelty in persecuting Christians. He issued orders across the kingdom that anyone who worships anything other than his idols would be subjected to severe punishment and death. Heralds went out shouting, “Whoever does not worship the idols and bow to them shall be thrown to ravenous beasts, tortured, and his head taken by the sword.” Diocletian organized the worship of idols, built temples for them, and appointed priests and chief priests. The residence of the head of these priests was in Antioch, Pisidia, and his name was Dasius, who was the father of Saint Marina. By virtue of his position, Dasius was devoted to idol worship, occupied with offerings and incense with full dedication. When Marina reached the age of five, her mother died while practicing idol worship, so her father decided to entrust her upbringing to a governess who would provide the best care and education.
The Saint in Her Governess’s House:
This governess lived in a small town near Antioch, Pisidia, about fifteen miles away. There, Marina lived with the saintly governess, away from her father’s idols and practices. The governess had strong faith, piety, and love for King Christ, and she was devoted to the lives and teachings of the saints. The child enjoyed the blessings of the virtuous governess, hearing nothing but prayers and supplications, and seeing nothing but meekness, faith, and hope. The governess managed to teach her true faith, not only by words but also through righteous example, gentle treatment, loving care, and noble service. Marina felt comfort and joy in this house, which made her forget her parents due to the mercy and humanity she witnessed in her Christian governess. She loved her governess dearly, became attached to her, and grew up with noble character, courage, purity, and honesty with others and herself.
Marina lived with her governess for ten years until she turned fifteen. Her father died when she was this age, so the saint preferred to remain in her governess’s house. Her governess also considered Marina’s remaining with her after her parents’ death a blessing from Christ.
The Saint’s Struggle:
Marina heard from her governess many stories of the holy martyrs, about their steadfast faith and bravery before rulers and governors. She heard that the pure martyrs competed for martyrdom and shedding their blood out of great love for King Christ. She rose to pray, saying: “O merciful Lord, You know the weakness of humanity. I ask You to strengthen me to overcome my opponents and offer You praise forever. Amen.”
Before the Governor:
One day, the new governor of Antioch, Pisidia, named Wafarnus, tasked with arresting and torturing Christians, was inspecting for Christians. He saw Saint Marina going out with her governess. Observing her beauty, he decided to make her his wife regardless of the cost. He sent his soldiers to seize her, but as they approached, she began to pray: “Have mercy on me, O God my Savior, and do not let my soul perish with the infidels nor my life with the bloodthirsty, and do not abandon me, lest the sinful destroy me, defile my ears, and distort my understanding. But send from above and grant me strength to endure with Your power; let me stand firm without fear and answer this vile one according to his questioning, for I see myself as a poor sheep among ravenous wolves, or a bird among hunters, or a fish in the fisherman’s net. Come to me, O Lord Jesus Christ, and save me from the hand of this impure infidel, and to You be praise and glory forever. Amen.” When Marina finished her prayer to the Lord Jesus, the soldiers returned to the governor, saying: “We could not capture this girl because she prays in the name of Christ.” The governor was shocked to hear that the girl was Christian.
Glory of Suffering:
The saint’s gaze was fixed on heaven as she said: “To You, O Lord, I have lifted my soul. My God, I trust in You; do not let me be disgraced nor let my enemies triumph over me, for all who wait for You shall not be ashamed; let the treacherous be confounded without cause… For I endure these torments for confessing Your holy name. Send Your mercy and compassion that this sorrow may turn into joy.” As Saint Marina sang a hymn, the soldiers beat her severely, tearing her body and causing profuse bleeding. Then the archangel Michael appeared and said to her: “Your faith is great, Marina; strengthen yourself in faith more, for by your good confession your soul will live, and you shall receive the holy baptism.”
In Prison:
Upon entering, she signed herself with the cross, saying: “O Holy One, who upholds all good things with Your hands. By the fear of Your glory all creation trembles. You are the hope of penitents and deliverer of captives. You are the Father of orphans and Judge of widows. Look upon my humility and poverty, save me and do not abandon me, O my God, for I have lifted my soul to You, and I have no hope besides You.”
Dragon, Satan, Baptism, and Martyrdom:
Saint Marina remained praying and faced all evils and obstacles sent by the governor, from the dragon and the devil, to the baptism, and ultimately her martyrdom by beheading, remaining steadfast in her faith and devoted in the service of Christ.
