نشأته:
كان والداه وثنيين غنيين.
سافر والده التاجر بالإسكندرية إلى اللد بفلسطين، وحضر عيد تكريس كنيسة الشهيد مارجرجس (جاورجيوس الكبادوكي). تأثر بالاحتفال المهيب لهذا الشهيد والألحان الكنسية، وإذ سمع عن سيرة الشهيد أحب الحياة المسيحية. نال سرّ العماد، وتهللت نفسه جدًا.
صلى إلى الله متشفعًا بقديسه العظيم أن يرزقه ولدًا، وإذ عاد إلى الإسكندرية أخبر زوجته بما تمتع به، فآمنت هي أيضًا واعتمدت. قبل الرب طلبتهما، ورزقه طفلًا أسمياه جاورجيوس.
نشأ الطفل في جوّ تقوي حيّ حتى بلغ الخامسة والعشرين من عمره حين تنيح والداه، وكان جاورجيوس إنسانًا تقيًا محبًا للكنيسة، مترفقًا بالمساكين والفقراء.
مع ابنة خاله أرمانيوس:
إذ تنيح والداه احتضنه خاله أرمانيوس والي الإسكندرية، الذي كان له ابنة وحيدة طيبة القلب، خرجت ذات يومٍ مع بعض صديقاتها للنزهة، فشاهدت ديرًا خارج المدينة وسمعت رهبانه يسبحون الله بتسابيح عذبة. فتأثرت جدًا مما سمعته، ولما عادت إلى بيتها سألت ابن عمتها جاورجيوس عما سمعته، فأجابها بأنها تسابيح إلهية يترنم بها الرهبان الذين قد تركوا العالم ليمارسوا الحياة الملائكية وأخذ الشاب يحدث ابنة خاله عن الإيمان بالسيد المسيح، وعن الحياة الأبدية وأيضًا عن العذاب الأبدي، فتأثرت جدًا وقبلت الإيمان بالسيد المسيح.
عرف أرمانيوس بالأمر فصار يلاطف ابنته ويخادعها، وإذ لم تنثنِ صار يهددها، أما هي ففي محبة كاملة لمسيحها قدمت حياتها ذبيحة حب لله، إذ قطع والدها رأسها ونالت إكليل الشهادة.
استشهاده:
عرف أرمانيوس أن جاورجيوس هو السبب في إيمان ابنته، فقبض عليه وعذبه عذابًا شديدًا، ثم أرسله إلى أريانوس والي أنصنا، الذي قام بدوره بتعذيبه، وأخيرًا قطع رأسه المقدس ونال إكليل الشهادة.
وكان هناك شماس يسمى صموئيل أخذ جسده المقدس وكفنه بإكرامٍ جزيلٍ ومضى به إلى منف من أعمال الجيزة. ولما علمت امرأة خاله ذلك أرسلت فأخذت الجسد ووضعته مع جسد ابنتها الشهيدة بالإسكندرية. يُقال أن جسده موجود حاليًا في كنيسة مار مرقس برشيد.

His Early Life:
His parents were wealthy pagans.
His father, a merchant in Alexandria, traveled to Lydda in Palestine and attended the consecration feast of the church of Saint George (George of Cappadocia). He was deeply moved by the solemn celebration of this martyr and the church hymns, and upon hearing about the life of the martyr, he loved the Christian life. He received the sacrament of baptism, and his soul rejoiced greatly.
He prayed to God, interceding through the great saint to be blessed with a child. Upon returning to Alexandria, he shared his experience with his wife, who also believed and was baptized. The Lord fulfilled their request and blessed them with a child, whom they named George.
The child grew up in a pious environment until he was twenty-five years old when his parents passed away. George was a devout man, loving the church and compassionate toward the poor and needy.
With His Cousin’s Daughter, Armanius:
After his parents’ death, his uncle Armanius, governor of Alexandria, took him under his care. Armanius had an only daughter, kind-hearted. One day, she went out with some friends for a walk, saw a monastery outside the city, and heard the monks praising God with beautiful hymns. She was deeply moved, and upon returning home, she asked her cousin George about what she had heard. He explained that these were divine praises sung by monks who had left the world to live a life of angelic devotion. The young man spoke to his cousin about faith in Jesus Christ, eternal life, and eternal punishment, which greatly moved her, and she accepted faith in Christ.
Armanius learned of this and tried to flatter and deceive his daughter. When she did not yield, he threatened her. Yet in complete love for her Christ, she offered her life as a sacrificial gift to God; her father beheaded her, and she received the crown of martyrdom.
His Martyrdom:
Armanius realized that George was the reason for his daughter’s faith, so he captured and severely tortured him, then sent him to Arianus, governor of Ansena, who also tortured him. Finally, George’s holy head was cut off, and he received the crown of martyrdom.
A deacon named Samuel took his holy body, wrapped it with great reverence, and carried it to Menouf in Giza. When a relative of George’s learned of this, she retrieved the body and placed it with the body of her martyred daughter in Alexandria. It is said that his body is currently kept in the Church of Saint Mark in Rosetta.
Feast Day: 7 Hatur.
