كانا قائدين في الجيش الروماني تحت ولاية جالريوس ومكسيميانوس. ولما دعيا ذات مرة لحضور الاحتفال بذبيحة كانت ستقرب للآلهة رفضا بثبات، فحمي غضب القيصر عليهما وجردهما من رتبهما وملابسهما العسكرية. وأمر أن توضع عليهما ثياب نسائية في حضوره، وأن يُوضع قيد حديدي في عنقيهما، وأن يمر بهما بين الجنود في هذه الحالة حتى ما يعتريهما الخزي والمهانة. وقد احتمل القديسان بكل شجاعة هذه الإهانات ثم أحالهما إلى أنطيوخس حاكم سوريا لكي يعذّبهما.
إذ فشل في كل محاولاته لردعهما أمر أن يُصْلَب واخس عاريًا ويجلد جلدًا قاسيًا بأعصاب البقر، فأسلم روحه تحت هذا التعذيب الوحشي. أما القديس سرجيوس فبعد أن اجتاز سلسلة من العذابات المريرة أثبت فيها صلابته وإيمانه، أمر بقطع رأسه فنال إكليل الشهادة.
They were commanders in the Roman army under the rule of Galerius and Maximian. When they were once summoned to attend a sacrifice offered to the pagan gods, they steadfastly refused. The emperor’s anger was kindled against them, and he stripped them of their ranks and military garments. He ordered that they be dressed in women’s clothing in his presence, have iron chains placed around their necks, and be paraded before the soldiers in this humiliating state so they might be shamed and disgraced. The saints endured these insults with great courage, after which the emperor handed them over to Antiochus, the governor of Syria, to torture them.
When all attempts to make them deny their faith failed, Antiochus ordered Bacchus to be crucified naked and severely scourged with ox sinews, and he surrendered his soul under this cruel torture. As for Saint Sergius, after enduring a series of severe tortures with steadfastness and faith, he was finally ordered to be beheaded and thus received the crown of martyrdom.
